Construction Guidance

Evaluating Electrical System Damage After a Water Event

Stay out of water near electrical equipment and do not operate wet switches, outlets, appliances, or panels. An electrician must evaluate affected systems before reuse. Drying the room does not establish that electrical equipment is safe to energize.

Interior reconstruction with exposed framing and protected floors

Describe the exposure accurately

Give the electrician the source of the water if known, the affected locations, and any record of its level or movement. Note where assessment is incomplete. NEMA advises consulting equipment manufacturers when evaluating water-exposed products.

Request an equipment and circuit record

  • Which circuits and equipment remain isolated?
  • Which items require replacement, and what guidance supports retention of any others?
  • Who coordinates required inspections and utility reconnection?

Carry the decision into reconstruction

Keep access available for the electrical work and applicable inspection before walls close. Share the documented status with the rebuilding team and occupants. Do not try to prove a device works by plugging it in or resetting a breaker.
