Understanding Negative Air Pressure in Restoration Containment

Negative pressure means the work enclosure is kept at a lower air pressure than the surrounding area so air tends to move into it. In appropriate remediation work, that helps limit movement of airborne particles out of the enclosure. It is not a standalone guarantee that adjacent space is safe to occupy.

Review the containment plan

Ask the specialist to define the work boundary, entry route, exhaust arrangement, and how operation will be checked. EPA describes containment as a professional judgment intended to reduce occupant and worker exposure. The setup must fit the actual building and work.

Coordinate the occupied building

  • Which doors, routes, rooms, or air-system components are affected?
  • Who checks that the enclosure remains intact and functioning?
  • Who should residents contact if a barrier is damaged or equipment stops?

Preserve the controls until the work is released

Do not open barriers, reposition equipment, or use the enclosure for storage. Agree on who authorizes removal and what findings must be recorded first. HEPA filtration addresses particles; do not assume that it controls every gas or odor associated with a loss.
