Assess the roof before finalizing the solar layout
The Department of Energy advises checking roof condition when selecting a solar installer. Ask the roofing professional to evaluate defects and planned renewal, and give the solar designer the current roof information.
If roof work is likely during the owner’s intended solar operating period, compare doing it first with a later removal-and-reinstallation plan. Request project-specific proposals; do not assume a roof must have a particular remaining lifespan just because a panel warranty has a stated term.
Coordinate mounting with the roof assembly
Ask the solar and roofing teams to identify the proposed attachment method, any penetrations and the details that protect the roof. Have the appropriate design professionals evaluate the supporting structure and project requirements.
Preserve access to drains, equipment and locations that will need inspection. Show cable routes and service paths on the coordination drawing so they are not improvised over completed roofing.
Review warranty and alteration procedures
