Ask who controls roof access
Identify the site supervisor, access point, roof work areas, and restricted areas below. Share known fragile surfaces, openings, equipment, and occupancy constraints with the contractor before work begins.
Leave system selection to the responsible employer
OSHA’s construction rules distinguish activities and roof conditions when specifying fall protection. The responsible employer must evaluate the applicable requirements, equipment, training, and rescue arrangements; a generic roof description is not a complete safety plan.
Coordinate the property around the work
- Keep occupants and visitors out of controlled roof and loading areas.
- Agree on pedestrian routes and protection below elevated work.
- Confirm emergency contacts and how property staff report a concern.
- Arrange escorted visits rather than entering the roof work area independently.
