Request the reason for the method
Have the specialist explain what was observed and why the treatment is suitable for that material. A finish, decorative coating, fabric, and unfinished building component may need different decisions. Keep cleaning decisions separate from structural or electrical evaluations.
Ask about a controlled evaluation
- Can the proposed treatment be evaluated on a representative area?
- What changes in appearance, finish, or odor would make the result unacceptable?
- If the result is unsuccessful, what alternative and cost authorization come next?
Document the decision before rebuilding
Record the evaluated area, method selected, limitations, and any materials designated for replacement. The owner should not experiment with cleaners on fire residues. Give the reconstruction team the final list so new finishes do not conceal unresolved work.
