Coordinating a Homeowner's Water Claim With a Contractor

A water claim usually involves several distinct jobs: controlling the source, mitigating the damage, estimating reconstruction, and reviewing insurance coverage. Name a contact for each. Clear handoffs help avoid missing records and duplicated work.

Build one shared location record

Ask the mitigation provider for affected-area documentation, material decisions, and drying records. Ask the reconstruction contractor to use the same room labels in its estimate. The insurer can then compare the proposed repair with the conditions documented at that location.

Agree on communication and authority

  • Who submits new findings to the adjuster?
  • Who can authorize added construction costs, and how are approvals recorded?
  • Who will preserve evidence if urgent work changes the visible condition?

Review differences before permanent work

Have the contractor explain disputed quantities or methods in construction terms. Request coverage explanations from the insurer in writing. Your contract obligations and the insurer’s payment decision are separate, so confirm funding for work that remains unresolved.
