Construction Guidance

How Supplemental Claims Work During Home Reconstruction

A supplement asks the insurer to review additional or revised loss costs. A construction change order changes the agreement with the contractor. They may concern the same discovery, but approving one does not automatically approve or fund the other.

Make the new finding reviewable

Ask the contractor to identify its location, what was exposed, why it was not included earlier, and how it affects the proposed repair. Preserve photographs and relevant records before the condition is covered, subject to safe work and necessary protective measures.

Ask the insurer about its process

  • Where should the revised estimate and supporting documents be submitted?
  • Does the insurer want another inspection before the affected permanent work?
  • Which items are accepted, still under review, or disputed?

Authorize costs with the funding understood

Have the contractor state the price and schedule effect of the added work. Confirm who pays if the insurer does not agree with the request. Do not assume that discovering hidden damage guarantees an increased payment.
