Documenting Personal Property Loss for a Homeowner Claim

Document belongings separately from building repairs so the claim record can follow each item through assessment, storage, replacement, or disposal. Use the insurer’s requested form if one is provided, and ask what evidence is acceptable when original receipts were lost.

Give each item an identifiable entry

Record the room, item description, make or model if known, approximate age, quantity, and observed condition. Attach existing purchase records and pre-loss photographs when available. Label estimates as estimates rather than inventing serial numbers or purchase dates.

Keep the inventory aligned with movement

  • Give packed items or groups a reference number linked to the original room.
  • Record who collected them and where they are stored.
  • Reconcile returned, replaced, and discarded items against the list.

Resolve evidence and value separately

Ask the insurer before disposing of items it may need to inspect, while following professional instructions for unsafe property. Request an explanation of disputed valuation or depreciation. Keep the inventory and supporting files somewhere accessible outside the damaged property.
