Fence and Exterior Damage After a North Texas Storm

A roof inspection does not account for every exterior loss. Make a ground-level record of affected fence runs, gates, siding, gutters, windows, and detached structures from a safe location. Stay away from downed lines, unstable trees, and leaning or broken elements.

Interior reconstruction with exposed framing and protected floors

Describe each damaged area

Use an elevation or location name and distinguish a post, panel, gate, trim piece, or other component. Include pre-loss repair records when available. Ask the contractor to state which parts need repair and why a larger replacement boundary is proposed.

Resolve shared-property questions

  • Who owns or maintains the fence or exterior element?
  • Does the proposed work affect a neighbor’s access or an association-managed area?
  • Are permits, boundary confirmation, or owner/association approvals needed?

Ask the insurer about classification

TDI notes that a homeowners policy may cover wind damage to fences and other structures. Do not assume it is excluded or settled like the dwelling. Request the relevant coverage, valuation, deductible, and limit explanation for the specific property.
