Record observations from safe locations
- Photograph visible missing roofing, damaged gutters, broken windows, or displaced exterior pieces.
- Note newly observed interior leaks without entering a damaged attic or standing under a sagging ceiling.
- Write down the storm date and the first time each condition was noticed.
Prepare the inspection questions
Ask the roofer to identify the roof areas examined, the observed condition of relevant coverings and flashings, and any inaccessible areas. A dent on a gutter is a clue about exposure, not proof that the entire roof needs replacement.
Keep inspection and claim decisions separate
Request the photographs and itemized repair explanation. If making a claim, ask the insurer about its inspection and evidence requirements before permanent work. Roof condition, repair scope, and insurance coverage should each have a clear explanation.
