Understanding Psychrometric Readings During Structural Drying

Psychrometrics describes the behavior of moist air. In a drying record, temperature and relative humidity help the provider interpret air conditions; other values can describe water-vapor content or condensation risk. These air measurements do not directly measure moisture inside wood, drywall, or a subfloor.

Ask what each value represents

A relative-humidity percentage depends on temperature. Comparing percentages taken under different temperatures can be misleading. Ask the mitigation provider to explain the chosen values, units, and measurement locations in plain language rather than relying on an unexplained chart.

Connect air readings to the drying plan

  • Where were readings taken: affected area, reference area, or equipment air path?
  • Were temperature, equipment operation, or building openings changed between readings?
  • Do the material readings also show the expected progress?

Keep goals tied to their purpose

An unaffected room can provide useful context, but its air reading is not automatically the acceptance target for every material. Ask for separate material goals and the evidence used for the reconstruction handoff.
