When a Tarp Is Needed After Storm Damage

If storm damage leaves the roof open to further water entry, ask a qualified roofing provider about temporary protection while permanent work is planned. Stay off the roof. Tarping requires safe access and is not an owner inspection or installation task.

Interior reconstruction with exposed framing and protected floors

Have the provider explain the temporary measure

Ask what opening or damaged area it will protect, whether access is currently safe, and what conditions could limit its effectiveness. A tarp does not establish the extent of roof damage and does not complete the permanent repair.

Preserve the pre-protection record

  • Ask authorized personnel for photographs before and after installation when safe.
  • Keep the location, installation date, provider details, work description, and receipt.
  • Tell the insurer about the temporary work and ask what further evidence it needs.

Plan the follow-up immediately

Assign responsibility for checking the protection, responding to renewed leaking, and removing it during permanent work. Coordinate assessment of affected interiors separately. If new water enters, report the change; do not climb up to reposition the tarp yourself.
