Diagnose water entry before prescribing a product
A waterproofing scope should start with history: when leakage occurs, wind direction, rainfall intensity, room location, changes in use, prior repairs, irrigation patterns, and whether the symptom is seasonal. Pair that history with exterior and interior observations, elevations, roof and drainage review, and targeted testing when appropriate. Water can travel along framing, insulation, masonry cavities, slab interfaces, or finishes, so the wettest interior point may be distant from the entry point. Opening an assembly is sometimes necessary, but it should be planned to preserve evidence and allow proper restoration.
Testing should answer a specific question. Controlled water testing may help isolate a window perimeter, joint, parapet, or wall area, while moisture measurements or exploratory work can help establish extent. ASTM standards may guide particular test methods or material evaluation, yet site conditions, test duration, pressure, and sequence must be recorded. An unstructured hose test can produce misleading results by forcing water into details differently from natural exposure.
