Assessing Char Depth and Structural Integrity After a Fire

Char depth helps describe the wood lost to fire. It does not, by itself, establish the remaining strength of a beam, stud, or roof member. A structural engineer must connect the measurements to the member’s function and the surrounding structure.

What the assessment needs to consider

The USDA Forest Products Laboratory describes a systematic evaluation that includes fire exposure, damaged members, connections, and protective coverings. A dark surface and a charred cross-section are different observations; neither should become an owner’s repair rule.

Questions for the structural engineer

  • Which members and connections were evaluated, and which remain concealed?
  • How does the remaining section affect the loads this member must carry?
  • Is retention, reinforcement, or replacement proposed, and what design information supports it?

Turn the findings into a buildable scope

Request a marked plan identifying each decision and any limits on access or loading. Carry the engineer’s repair details and required inspections into the reconstruction scope. Do not scrape char, remove supports, or enter restricted areas to obtain your own measurements.
