Air Movers and Dehumidifiers: How Drying Equipment Is Selected

Air movement helps moisture leave wet materials; dehumidification removes water vapor from the surrounding air. The equipment must work as a system. Ask the mitigation provider to connect its selection to the affected materials and measured conditions, not simply a room’s size.

Interior reconstruction with exposed framing and protected floors

Start with the loss assessment

Before equipment selection, the provider needs to evaluate the water source, contamination concerns, affected materials, and safe power. EPA cautions against using fans before determining that water is clean or sanitary. Owners should not arrange their own fans in an unassessed loss.

Ask how the plan will be checked

  • Which wet materials does each equipment group serve?
  • What air and material readings will show whether the plan is working?
  • Who will respond if power stops, equipment alarms, or access conditions change?

Separate drying from rebuilding

Request an equipment plan and monitoring record from the mitigation provider. Give the reconstruction contractor the final material findings and remaining issues. Equipment count or noise alone does not tell an owner whether the structure is ready for new finishes.
