Understanding Your Deductible in a Restoration Claim

The deductible is the part of a claim you are responsible for under the policy. It may be a dollar amount or a percentage. Ask the insurer to translate the applicable deductible into dollars before comparing the claim payment with the contractor’s price.

Confirm the applicable policy terms

Check which deductible applies to the reported cause, especially wind or hail. Ask what insured amount a percentage uses; it is not necessarily a percentage of the repair invoice. Keep the insurer’s calculation with the claim estimate.

Separate the other owner costs

  • Which amounts are deductible, depreciation, or above a policy limit?
  • Which proposed items are disputed or excluded by the insurer?
  • Which choices are owner upgrades outside the loss repair?

Document payment honestly

Texas law prohibits a contractor from waiving or helping an owner avoid an insurance deductible. TDI notes that the insurer can request proof of payment. Agree on legitimate payment terms and keep receipts; do not accept an inflated estimate or a disguised credit to erase the deductible.
