When to Involve a Public Adjuster in a Homeowner Claim

A public insurance adjuster represents the policyholder in a claim. Hiring one is an option when help with the claim would be useful; it does not guarantee a higher payment. Review the proposed services and fees against the issue you need resolved.

Define the unresolved problem

Ask the insurer for an explanation of the disputed estimate or coverage decision first. Organize the relevant photographs, estimates, reports, and correspondence. This helps you explain whether you need help with missing damage, valuation, documentation, or another claim issue.

Check the proposed agreement

  • Verify the public adjuster’s Texas license and review its status through TDI.
  • Ask what services are included and how the fee applies to the settlement.
  • Understand payment obligations even if the insurer’s offer does not increase.

Keep the roles independent

TDI states that a public adjuster working on a claim cannot also act as its contractor. A public adjuster does not provide legal advice. Keep construction pricing and repair authorization with the contractor, and seek appropriate legal advice for legal disputes.
