Metal Roof vs. TPO

Metal roofing uses formed panels; TPO, or thermoplastic polyolefin, uses a single-ply membrane with heat-welded seams. TPO is used for low-slope roofing, while metal systems include several panel and seam designs. Compare complete assemblies suitable for your building before comparing price.

Compare panels with a membrane system

A metal proposal should name the panel profile, seam and fastening arrangement. A TPO proposal should name the membrane and attachment method. For either option, include the roof deck, insulation, edges, drainage and equipment penetrations in the design; the exposed covering is only part of the work.

Check the details for the actual roof

  • Is the selected product suitable for the measured slope and supporting construction?
  • How will drains, gutters, roof edges and equipment curbs be handled?
  • What insulation and condensation-control approach is included?
  • How will the new roof meet walls or a different roof system?
  • How will maintenance staff reach equipment?

Compare the complete installed proposal

Include removal or preparation, repairs, accessories, access and maintenance requirements. Read the proposed warranty documents for each assembly. A generic metal-versus-TPO price or lifespan claim does not establish which system fits the building or what a particular warranty covers.
